William Augustine Mossop
The photograph is the only one of William and was taken in Nottingham when he moved
to the Sherwood Foresters. He kept it with him, inscribed to his daughter, throughout
his subsequent service. It was sent back to his daughter after his death, who kept
it all her life and eventually gave it to her grandson. It is still visibly blood
stained.
His daughter died just a few years ago aged 98, would have been thrilled to have
seen her beloved father on the website. She often recalled his trips home from the
battlefield, especially his last Christmas visit in 1916.
William was killed taking part in the Battle of Passchendaele (3rd Ypres). He was at the time serving with the Sherwood Foresters. We do not know which battalion he was serving with. However, at least 3 battalions of the Sherwood Foresters were involved in the battle. |

Some Military History
There were four Mossop brothers who served, only two survived. Their family story is fascinating and has survived thanks to two of the Great Grandsons. The people of Eccleshall should be proud of such a family who move out before the war.
